Jannik Sinner suspended for three months due to the use of clostebol. He will not compete in Doha. This decision was made after the Italian, the world’s best tennis player, reached a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency.

To remind you, he tested positive for clostebol twice last year at the Indian Wells Masters tournament. The suspension will last from February 9th to May 4th, meaning Sinner will not play in the Doha tournament. It was determined that Sinner was not responsible for ingesting the banned substance, that there was no intention to cheat, and that he did not benefit from the presence of clostebol in his body.

Given that athletes are responsible for the actions of their coaching staff, Sinner must be punished, and three months seems like an appropriate sanction. Four days from a previous period were also considered.

WADA Statement

The International Tennis Integrity Agency cleared Jannik Sinner of charges, but WADA insisted that the Italian be penalized.

  • We believe that the verdict „without fault or negligence“ is not in accordance with the current rules, and we seek a suspension of one to two years. Over the years, the minimum threshold for various substances unintentionally ingested has been adjusted – said James Fitzgerald, spokesman for the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

Sinner has been training in Doha this week, preparing for the tournament, but the penalty takes effect immediately, and he will not play in the tournament in Qatar. In passing, in Doha, he briefly responded to a Sportal journalist’s question about whether he is ready:

  • I hope so – said the world’s best tennis player.

As his suspension ends on May 4th, we can expect his return to the court at the Rome Masters, which begins on May 7th.

Do you think the punishment is sufficient?
